Danube Bend from Budapest: Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom on a Day Trip

Updated October 13, 2026 · 6 min read

For most visitors who want all three towns in one day, the Full-Day Danube Bend Tour with Lunch is the one to book: €109, 9 hours, 508 reviews at 4.2 stars. It covers Esztergom, Visegrád and Szentendre with a three-course lunch. If you only have half a day, skip the tour and ride the suburban train to Szentendre on your own.

The last row is a lake trip with one Danube Bend stop, not a Danube Bend tour. It is here so you do not book it by mistake. The booking page puts the day at about 10 hours, depending on traffic.

The full-day bus tour

The route runs from Budapest to Esztergom, where the listing promises the largest Catholic church in Hungary and a short photo stop in Slovakia across the Mária Valéria Bridge. Then comes Visegrád, with a hill-top view of the bend and the three-course lunch, and finally Szentendre, the “artists’ village” with cobbled streets. Guides work in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian.

The way back depends on the calendar. The listing says you return by boat on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 May to 27 September, and by bus on Wednesdays from 1 April to 20 May and from 11 September to 31 October. If the Danube is extremely low or high, the boat is replaced by a bus. Ask which day suits you before booking, because the boat leg is a large part of the appeal.

Bring a passport or ID card. The meeting point is the operator’s office and you are asked to be there 30 minutes before departure. Hotel pickup is only included if you select that option. The listing says the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments.

The small-group forest walk

The €71.10 tour leaves from Batthyány tér at 9 am in a minibus with at most 7 guests. It walks 4.6 km downhill in about 75 minutes through the Danube-Ipoly National Park to Visegrád Castle. Entry to the castle (€8 adults, €4 students) and lunch are not included, and the minibus leaves Szentendre at 5:00 pm. You can stay longer and go back on your own by boat or suburban train.

It skips Esztergom entirely and has only 20 reviews so far, so it is a bet on one guide rather than a tested format. Its booking page says it is not suitable for children under 8 or for wheelchair users, and it warns that the walk may be hard for people with mobility problems.

The e-bike ride

The e-bike tour starts at Dob utca 28, with a limit of 6 participants and an English-speaking guide. It covers roughly 50 km round trip with breaks at the Parliament, Margaret Island and Római part before 1.5 hours in Szentendre; one drink in Szentendre is included. Rain cancels the tour, and its booking page excludes children under 14 and people over 65. That is a real workout for a day trip, even with a motor.

Doing it yourself

Szentendre is the easy one. The H5 suburban line runs from Batthyány tér to Szentendre in roughly 40 minutes, every 10 to 20 minutes during the day. You need a city ticket plus a supplement for the stretch outside the city, which you can buy from machines or the BKK app. Esztergom has trains from Nyugati station in about an hour. Visegrád is reached by bus from Árpád híd in about 80 minutes, and seasonal boats from Vigadó tér run between April and September. Timetables change, so check them for your date.

A car is not needed for Szentendre. It does help if you want to chain Visegrád and Esztergom on your own clock; you can compare rental cars for Budapest and read the excess and fuel terms before booking.

Which one is right for whom

Choose the bus tour if you want the three towns and a lunch without planning anything. Choose the forest walk if you dislike coaches and are fine with a long day. Choose the e-bike if cycling is the point. Choose the train to Szentendre alone if you have only a morning and would rather wander than follow a guide. See all day trips from Budapest or, for a half-day on the water instead, read which Danube cruise to book.
