Hungarian Wine in Budapest: City Tasting or Winery Tour?
Updated October 13, 2026 · 6 min read
For most visitors a tasting in the city is the better choice: the Hungarian Wine Tasting with 8 Wines and Tapas costs €60.31, takes 2 hours and has 491 reviews at 4.9 stars. Book the half-day Etyek Wine Tour with Meal and Transfer only if seeing a cellar and eating at a farm matters more than roughly €25 extra and two to three more hours.

The tastings in the city
Four tastings share one basic format, a guided tasting at a table, and they differ in numbers and tone.
The €60.31 tasting is led by a wine expert at a wine bar (called “Wine the Gap” in the listing). The listing names the white grape cserszegi fűszeres, then furmint, which it calls Hungary’s best-known grape, and reds such as kadarka and Bull’s Blood. Tapas come from farms outside the city. The listing marks it wheelchair accessible, which you should still confirm. It says pregnant women and children under 18 are not suitable.
The €49.34 tasting at Bortodoor, Zichy Jenő utca 32, pours a glass of sparkling wine and seven wines (three white, one light red, three red) with a charcuterie board and takeaway notes. Vegetarian boards are possible on request. Under-18s are listed as not suitable.
The €58.27 class by Taste Hungary runs most evenings from 6 to 8 pm at Bródy Sándor utca 9, with 8 wines ending in a sweet botrytised Tokaj aszú. The minimum is two people and the listing says it can be cancelled with an alternative or full refund if numbers are not met. The legal drinking age in Hungary is 18.
The €44.82 tasting has the most reviews of the city tastings (746) but pours only 5 wines in 1.5 hours; the operator describes it as sommelier-led, with artisan cheese and charcuterie.
The Etyek winery tour
The Etyek-Buda region lies about 30 km west of the city and is known for crisp whites and sparkling wine. The €85 tour picks up from selected downtown hotels by minibus, and the listing puts Etyek village half an hour outside Budapest. You visit two family-owned wineries, taste four wines at each and finish with a two-course home-cooked meal at a local farm. Coffee, soft drinks and tips are not included. The tour needs a minimum of two people, and if it is not met you are offered another date. Vegetarian or gluten-free meals are available if you say so in advance.
Transport is included, so nobody has to drive.
The estate tasting
The €24.67 option is a tasting at the Rókusfalvy estate in the Etyek region: four wines or champagnes, scones, a short walk among the vines and a cellar tour. The listing says the presentation is in Hungarian, and it has only 8 reviews at 4.3 stars. It does not include transport from Budapest, though the estate offers to help you order a transfer. Reservations are accepted up to 48 hours ahead. Children under 18 are not suitable.
Which one for whom
Take the €60.31 or €49.34 tasting if you have an evening and want a guided introduction to Hungarian grapes and wine regions. Take the Taste Hungary class if you want to finish with a Tokaj dessert wine. Take the Etyek tour if you want to see where the wine is made and have a meal on a farm. Take the estate tasting only if you are happy with a Hungarian-language guide and can organise the trip yourself.
Wine also comes on food walks, which you can compare in food in Budapest: market hall, food tour or cooking class. Everything related is in the food tours category.
